As a community building lesson that focuses on creative problem solving and scissor skills, 3rd graders learned about the Native American tribe's totem poles. They learned that the faces decorative, usually animal) on a totem pole (carved out of a tree trunk) represent members of the tribe. We looked at how the Indians stylized their animals to make them unique as well as fit on the totem pole. Students were instructed to create their animal using only paper (no pencil could be shown). The more details the better! I love how these turned out this year!
