Monet Mood Landscapes

Claude Monet painted the same thing over and over again, but during different times of day during different seasons.  Due to this (see below, Haystack series example) although his subject remained the same, his color palette changed dramatically from painting to painting.   Students explored how the use of color can effect a person's mood and feeling by drawing one landscapes, making a copy of it, then used two opposite sets of colors to color each in. We then hung the pictures around the room and discussed how color affects your artwork and how people look at it.

Hokusai's Great Wave

Could these be any more wonderful?!?!  3rd graders learned about the Japanese artist Hokusai and looked at his painting, The Great Wave off Kanagawa.  Students then tried their hand at creating a simple replica of the painting. They are fantastic!

Kindergarten Georgia O'Keeffe Paintings

Kindergarten studied the GIGANTIC and HUGE flowers that Georgia O'Keeffe painted!  They have a hard time drawing and painting BIG - which is why we practiced that skill with the help of O'Keeffe!  Each class was given only 3 colors to paint with, which helped with creating large, semi-abstract flowers.  Afterwards, students were able to add some details to their flowers using markers and crayons.
