5th graders started this project by learning what tints and shades are (see below... tints = color + white, shade = color + black). They then painted concentric circles, starting with white for the moon and slowly got into the darker sky by first adding tints, then adding shades of blue. Students then added the ground of their landscape + snow with white paint. 5th graders then learned what a silhouette is (the dark shape and outline of someone or something visible against a lighter background) and added their winter landscape silhouettes using black, brown and dark blue oil pastels.
