At the beginning of the year I got tons of samples of house finishes donated from an interior decorating firm in Chicago. I struggled with what to do with them until I thought of the perfect thing to add onto my Native American unit. 3rd graders looked at Native American art and noticed the theme of animals. We learned about the importance of spirit animals in Native American culture and then each table received a packet of animals and their meanings to the Native American people. Students then chose a spirit animal that best represents them and they drew that onto the sample chips using pencil first, them sharpie. The students were so incredibly excited and proud of their animal spirit necklaces!
